Use and benefits
The janeu is made of pure cotton thread strands and is generally off-white in color. It is known as the upanayana or yagnopavit amongst its many names. A sacred brahmin janeu consists of 6 strands of thread and is used during the Hindu brahmin rituals and ceremonies. It commences the beginning of one's spiritual journey and symbolizes the purification of the soul.
